“Everything has beauty if you look close enough, even slime mould”
Hi I’m Amy!
Here’s a bit about me:
I’m the other side of 45 but still feel 21, I’m a mum of two teens who keep me on my toes and married to my best friend who’s a filmmaker. I love adventure, loud music and sunshine!
I also love nature…..a lot! Particularly plants, trees, the ocean, clouds, blue skies, octopus, fish, fungi, lychen, moss, rocks, shells, nudibranchs and seahorses to name a few, in fact all sea life, plants, reptiles, birds, insects, animals, so pretty much everything, even microscopic slime moulds (yes I know its weird). Everything has beauty if you look close enough, even slime mould.
My first love was nature! I was born in The New Forest (UK) and spent my early years climbing trees, examining bugs and exploring the ancient forest through the gate at the end of my garden.
My second great love was drawing! At first it was cartoons and psychedelic patterns adorning my bedroom walls. After life took me on a journey from working in London to backpacking in faraway places I went full circle and moved back to Hampshire with my own family. It was then as I drew pictures for my young children to colour that my creative curiosity was reignited and my drawing style developed.
I see patterns everywhere! Having became tuned in to seeing patterns in nature I now love to find them as I explore the beaches, forests and heathland where I live in The South Downs National Park.
…and a bit about my art:
My drawings are in permanent, water & fade proof fine line pens, sometimes featuring alcohol markers or paint markers on smooth Bristol Board. I’m also about to embark on larger scale canvas pieces in paint markers.
When curiosity took me on a deep dive into the world of plant cell micrographs I became fascinated by the complex and intricate patterns and shapes hidden in the natural world and how so much beauty is hidden beneath the surface (thats when I discovered slime mould). Around the same time I had discovered the work of Ernst Haeckel and thought his detailed illustrations of the natural world were amazing and so beautiful.
With these in mind I began experimenting with drawing patterns and single cell organisms from my imagination. I soon developed a drawing style using strings of cell like shapes to create lines. As my art has developed I’ve enjoyed the creative freedom of allowing the shapes to form as I draw, without a plan, sometimes abstract based on a feeling, sometimes a representation of what I’ve seen in nature, capturing landscapes, flowers or rock formations. Other times the suggestion of seeing the natural world at a cellular level.
Drawing this way is my art therapy. It offers me complete escape, its meditative and I find the repetitive process calming and almost hypnotic which helps quiet my overthinking mind, the perfect antidote for the stresses of life. I love to listen to music when I draw, it sets the rhythm, allowing my mind time to wander, shapes to form organically and colours to be chosen intuitively.
It’s important to me that my artwork makes people happy so I like to use bright uplifting or calming colours, which I think add a little piece of happiness to your wall.
I offer a bespoke service to work with you to provide art that compliments your location, in your preferred colour scheme. I consider this a collaborative approach and am always open to hear your ideas.
My work has been exhibited at Sage & Salt Studio in Petersfield and was selected for The Women in Art exhibition at The Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth in 2023. I’m continuing to build my collection for private sales and future exhibitions and I’m excited about the prospect of producing large scale pieces and mixed media work.
A customer once remarked that my drawings ‘just make you feel happy’ what more could I ask for!
I hope you enjoy my drawings and if you have any questions or want to get in touch I’d love to hear form you so drop me a line x
