“Everything has beauty if you look close enough, even slime mould”
Hi I’m Amy!
Here’s a bit about me:
I’m the other side of 45 but still feel 21, I’m a mum of two teens who keep me on my toes and married to my best friend who’s a filmmaker. I love adventure, loud music and sunshine!
I also love nature…..a lot! Particularly plants, trees, the ocean, clouds, blue skies, octopus, fish, fungi, lychen, moss, rocks, shells, nudibranchs and seahorses to name a few, in fact all sea life, plants, reptiles, birds, insects, animals, so pretty much everything, even microscopic slime moulds (yes I know its weird). Everything has beauty if you look close enough, even slime mould.
My first love was nature! I was born in The New Forest, Hampshire (UK) and spent my early years climbing trees, examining bugs and exploring the ancient forest through the gate at the end of my garden.
My second great love was drawing! At first it was cartoons and psychedelic patterns adorning my bedroom walls. After life took me on a journey from working in London to backpacking in faraway places I went full circle and moved back to Hampshire with my own family. It was then as I drew pictures for my young children to colour that my creative curiosity was reignited and my drawing style developed.
I see patterns everywhere! Having became tuned in to seeing patterns in nature I now love to find them as I explore the beaches, forests and heathland where I live in The South Downs National Park.
…and a bit about my art:
My drawings are in permanent, water & fade proof fine line pens, sometimes featuring alcohol markers or paint markers on smooth Bristol Board. I’m currently experimenting with paint pens on canvas.
I started drawing this way in 2019 during a challenging time when I longed for a personal form of art therapy, a time to immerse myself, relax and escape.
After curiosity took me on a deep dive into the world of plant cell micrographs I was hooked. I felt an immediate connection to the shapes and patterns and excited to find something so beautiful hidden in the natural world.
I became fascinated by the complex and intricate patterns and excited to find so much beauty hidden beneath the surface.
Around the same time and by chance I discovered the work of Ernst Haeckel after finding a selection of his prints in a second hand shop (this was before they were everywhere).and thought his detailed illustrations of the natural world were so beautiful (thats when I discovered slime mould).
With these in mind I began experimenting with drawing patterns and single cell organisms. I soon developed the drawing style I use now, using strings of cell like shapes to create lines. As this has developed over time I’ve learnt that it’s the creative freedom of allowing the shapes to form as I draw, without plan that gives me the most reward.
The repetitive immersive process offers me complete escape, I find it meditative and calming, almost hypnotic. It helps quiet my overthinking mind, the perfect antidote for the stresses of life. I usually listen to music when I draw, it sets the rhythm, allowing my mind time to wander, shapes to form organically and colours to be chosen intuitively.
All my drawings are inspired by patterns, shapes or colours I find in the natural world, often when out on local walks where I live in The South Downs National Park. Sometimes they are based on a single find, a flower, shell or piece of bark. Other times it’s a landscape, cloud formation or pattern in the sand that catches my attention. Every time it’s about letting the inspiration and feelings come through as I’m drawing, never knowing exactly what will happen until it’s done.
It’s important to me that my artwork is uplifting and makes people happy so I like to use bright uplifting or calming colours.
I offer a bespoke service to work with you to provide art that compliments your location, in your preferred colour scheme in a size and shape that suits. I consider this a collaborative approach and am always open to hear your ideas.
A selection of my drawings are currently for sale at Sage & Salt Studio in Petersfield, others have been featured in the May '25 edition of ‘Artist Close Up’ contemporary art magazine and ‘Rockpool’ was selected for ‘The Women in Art’ exhibition at The Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth. I’m continuing to build my collection for private sales and future exhibitions and am excited about producing large scale statement pieces.
A customer once remarked that my drawings ‘just make you feel happy’ what more could I ask for!
